JCC Rockland Pickleball Updates

We are honored that you call JCC Rockland Your Pickleball home, and we work hard to make all players feel welcome.

Pickleball at JCC Rockland is a social and recreational sport designed to help every player feel successful. Here are a few tips you can do to make a positive impact on our program

  • Be happy! You are playing the game you love!
  • Introduce yourselves
  • Welcome all skill levels. Advanced players should “play it forward,” and team-up with newer players to help them improve the game you all love!
  • Keep a positive attitude, even if your partner is struggling.
  • Be gracious, kind, and meet at the net after your game.
  • Smile, It looks good on you!

Review our pickleball etiquette practice.

Did you know that your hands might hold the key to a longer, healthier life?

It sounds like a magic trick, but it’s pure science: your grip strength is one of the most powerful predictors of overall health, longevity, and even cardiovascular fitness. It’s not just about hand strength—it’s a window into your nervous system and muscle health.

The Ultimate Test: Can You Hang*?
A common “gold standard” benchmark for functional strength is to hang from a bar. Here is the target for a healthy, strong 40-year-old:

  • Men: 2 minutes
  • Women: 1 minute, 30 seconds

Older than 40? Reduce the time by 10% per decade. For example a 70-year old man should hang from a bar for 1 minute, 24 seconds and it’s 1 minute 3 seconds for a 70-year old woman.

The “Use It or Lose It” Reality
Starting in our 30s, we all face a natural process called sarcopenia—the gradual loss of muscle mass (about 3–5% per decade). After age 50, that process shifts into high gear. It can become a vicious cycle: Being less active leads to muscle loss, which makes it even harder to stay active.

The Metabolism Myth
You’ve probably heard people say their metabolism “broke” as they got older. In reality, muscle is metabolically active tissue—it burns more calories just to exist! Most people aren’t losing their metabolism; they are losing the muscle that powers it.

Test Your Strength & Chat With Our Team! Gauging your grip strength is an excellent way to see if your current program is working for you, or if it’s time for a change.

Contact our Fitness Manager, Lisa Goldstein, to set up a time to test your grip strength and discuss your routine.

Whether you want to master the dead hang or just feel more confident carrying the groceries, we are here to help you build a stronger you.

*Want to work toward that dead hang or a full pull-up?
Try the assisted pull-up machines available in the main fitness center and used during classes in The Penthouse Studio. This machine allows you to offset your body weight, making it easier to build the necessary strength at your own pace. As always, our fitness team is available to show you how they work and help you get started.

How to Choose the Right Group Fitness Class

With more than 70 classes on our weekly schedule–choosing the right class for your fitness goals can become overwhelming. Many times, we have several classes happening at once in different studios. The best part is, if you tried one type of class and didn’t love it, there’s probably still another fitness class that might be a game-changer for you. Here are some tips.

Seated Classes – Intended for those who cannot stand and exercise (for any reason) for 45 minutes.

Active Classes – Low impact classes with no transitions from the floor to standing.

Body Conditioning/Functional Fitness/Dynamic Strength Circuits – Classes include cardio movements and strength training. Might include repeated floor planks, burpees, overhead strength moves, etc. Participants should be able to perform these moves as intended and find them challenging.

Fitness 450/450 Cycling/Pump and Agility/HIIT Cardio/Fit Fusion/Boxing – Intended for those looking to push themselves outside of their comfort zone. Think: Go breathless, recover, repeat.

Barre/Pilates/Yoga – Intended for those looking to improve core strength, balance, and posture. Strength movements typically include light weights, straps, and bodyweight exercises

Booking & Reservations

The booking window for all reservations opens 3 days prior at 2pm. The most efficient way to book is on the app. You may also ask our reception team to make the reservation for you, but we kindly ask that you do not ask our receptionists to book a session before the window opens. They will not be able to accommodate this request. You can set a reminder to book any future class as soon as the booking window opens by simply hitting the bell icon on the reservation list.

You may find yourself on a waiting list for a class or court time. When spots become available, everyone on the waitlist receives a notification at the same time. Bookings then happen on a first-come, first serve basis.

If you book a timeslot and decide not to play, kindly unbook yourself.
