The Pickleball Craze

Pickleball is here to stay at JCC Rockland. Last winter members came to us asking for Pickleball. We asked, what the heck is Pickleball? Well we soon learned that Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the USA. It is a hybrid of tennis, ping pong, and badminton. It is played using paddles and wiffle-type balls on a court, smaller than a tennis court.

Pickleball gives you a good aerobic workout without much stress and strain on joints and muscles. The endorphins that are released with all exercise are useful in elevating self-esteem and combating depression.

Pickleball has been around since 1965, invented by Congressman Joel Pritchard, Barney McCallum, and Bill Bell on Bainbridge Island, WA. The game was named after the Prichard’s cocker spaniel, Pickles, who loved to grab the ball and run off with it. They would say “It’s Pickle’s ball”, and that is how Pickleball got its name.

New to Pickleball? JCC Rockland has you covered. We hold regular clinics that help you learn the game and meet friends to play with. Upcoming dates will be posted at the fitness reception desk.

Open play hours are Monday – Friday 7am – noon
Saturday 10:30am – 6pm
