Snow day work-'in'

I’m already dreading being cooped up in my house all weekend. I admit it – I am looking forward to the snuggling on the couch in front of the fireplace with hot cocoa aspect, but I can only do that for so long. I’ve already finished watching Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Making A Murderer on Netflix. And, I’m all caught up on my TV shows from my DVR. So what’s a girl that hits the gym every day supposed to do?

I turned to the experts at the JCC – I asked ​Michael Pingryn, Fitness Manager, what I should do to keep active at home. Keeping in mind that I don’t own a treadmill or other fitness equipment, here’s what he told me​:​

A great work-‘in’ can still challenge you and make you​ feel fit and fabulous​. Not being able to get to the gym because of bad weather DOESN’T mean that you can’t get a good workout at home. Even if you don’t have any kind of fitness equipment at home, you will be surprised how much great exercise you can get using nothing but your body-weight.
Start with this circuit. Try doing each exercise for 30 seconds.

  • SQUATS work your quads, hamstrings, and glutes. They can be done at home in front of the mirror. You can even use a chair underneath you so you know how far down to go.
  • PUSH-UPS exercise your chest, triceps, and shoulders. Push ups can be done on any floor of your house. If floor push-ups are too difficult, you can always do incline push-ups against the couch or a wall.
  • PLANKS are one of the best core-strengthening exercises. And all you need is you to do it. If the floor plank is too difficult in the “knees up” position, simply do the same exercise with your knees on the ground to make it a little more manageable!

​Repeat this 3-minute circuit in between commercial breaks, or repeat it for longer length of time.
