Happy first anniversary to Pickleball at JCC Rockland!
We can’t believe it has been a whole year since a few members asked us to start pickleball at the JCC. Our first reaction: “What the heck is pickleball? Is there really a demand for such a silly sounding game?”
Trusting our members and taking a leap of faith, we put it out there, and come they did! Before long we were so inundated with pickles that we had to revise our initial policies, hours of play, create clinics, separate skill levels , and more.
We are happy to report that year two looks even more exciting and dynamic. We will kick off the season with the Ultimate Pickleball Party on Saturday, November 2 at 7PM. Stay tuned for upcoming clinics and more.
For those of you who still haven’t caught the pickleball bug and are wondering what we are talking about, pickleball is a hybrid of tennis, ping pong, and badminton. It is played using paddles and wiffle-type balls on a court, smaller than a tennis court.
Pickleball gives you a good aerobic workout without much stress and strain on joints and muscles. The endorphins that are released with all exercises are useful in elevating self-esteem and combating depression.
Pickleball has been around since 1965, invented by Congressman Joel Pritchard, Barney McCallum, and Bill Bell on Bainbridge Island, WA. The game was named after the Prichard’s cocker spaniel, Pickles, who loved to grab the ball and run off with it. They would say “It’s Pickle’s ball”, and that is how Pickleball got its name.
