With no synagogue, Jewish friends or family, the hardened old man has done such an effective job of creating a new identity that, when faced with his own mortality, the rabbis refuse his about-face appeal to be buried in a Jewish cemetery. Determined to return to his birthplace and establish his ancestry, he enlists the help of Gül, a brash, chain-smoking Turkish girl with a troubled history of her own. The unlikely duo sets out on a road trip to a village on the Hungarian-Romanian border, a journey that will irrevocably change them both.

Once In A Lifetime

Hudson Valley Premiere
Country: France
Language: French
Year of Release: 2016
Running Time: 105 minutes
Directed by  Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar
Genre: Drama/Holocaust
Speaker: Etzion Neuer

A dedicated history teacher at a French high school, Anne Gueguen (Ariane Ascaride), is determined to give the best education she can to her underprivileged inner-city pupils. Overcoming their apathy, however, is proving to be more difficult than expected. Frustrated but undaunted, Anne tests her multicultural classroom with a unique assignment: a national competition on the theme of child victims of the Nazi concentration camps. The project is initially met with extreme resistance, until a face-to-face encounter with a Holocaust survivor changes the students’ attitudes dramatically. Despite their long-shot odds of winning, these once-rebellious teens soon begin to see one another – and themselves – in a whole new light. Once In A Lifetime demonstrates the enduring impact of the Holocaust in transforming future generations.

Rabin In His Own Words

Hudson Valley Premiere
Country: Israel
Language: Hebrew
Year of Release: 2016
Running Time:
110 minutes
Directed by Erez Laugher
Genre: Documentary
Speakers: Eran Polishuk, Director of Film & Media, Office of Cultural Affairs, Consulate General of Israel in NY, Clyde Haberman, contributing writer and former columnist for The New

Twenty years after the assassination that plunged Israel and the peace process into turmoil, RABIN IN HIS OWN WORDS is a moving firsthand account of the late prime minister and statesmen’s dramatic life story. Through a combination of rare recordings and documents, Yitzhak Rabin himself narrates his biography, from his childhood in Tel Aviv as the son of a labor leader before the founding of the State of Israel, to farm worker, then through his IDF military service and his later diplomatic and political career. Included in this unique assemblage of archival materials are newly released 8mm home movies, family letters, uncensored memoirs, off-the-record interviews, and other personal records never seen or heard since their original broadcast 40 years ago. These candid public and private thoughts from a famously introverted personality illuminate the lesser known chapters of Rabin’s story, as well as some of the most critical junctures of the Jewish State.
An important historical document, RABIN IN HIS OWN WORDS reveals the complexity and contradictions of a legendary leader, while rekindling the debate about opportunities lost and taken for peace. Winner of the Best Documentary prize at the Haifa International Film Festival.
